Finding sports and markets
A sportsbook typically organizes events by sport, league, start time and live status. Market depth changes by event, and selections may close or have their odds updated before a wager is accepted.
Read the settlement rules
Before confirming a bet, check the event, selection, odds, stake and potential return shown on the bet slip. Review how postponements, abandoned events, overtime, player participation and obvious pricing errors are handled.
How odds and returns work
Canadian-facing sportsbooks may display decimal odds. The potential return is the accepted stake multiplied by the decimal price, and that return includes the original stake. For example, a C$10 single accepted at 2.50 has a potential return of C$25, meaning C$15 would be profit if it wins. This calculation does not estimate the likelihood of winning.
Combining three selections at 1.50, 1.80 and 2.00 produces combined decimal odds of 5.40 before any operator adjustment. A C$10 stake would display a C$54 potential return, but every leg must be settled as a winner unless the published rules say otherwise.
Lower odds are not “safe,” and higher odds are not automatically better value. Odds include the sportsbook’s margin and can move with new information or market activity.
Settlement situations to review
| Postponement | Check how long an event can be delayed before wagers are voided. |
|---|---|
| Player markets | Confirm participation requirements, including whether the player must start. |
| Overtime | Read whether overtime, extra time or shootouts are included. |
| Dead heat | Tied outcomes may reduce the payout under the published dead-heat rule. |
| Cash out | An offered amount can change or disappear and is not guaranteed to remain available. |
Live-betting checks
Live data and broadcasts can be delayed. A market may suspend while an important play is reviewed, and the accepted price may differ from the first price displayed. Inspect the final bet receipt rather than assuming the earlier screen was accepted.
Keep betting within limits
- Treat betting as entertainment, not an investment.
- Set a fixed spending limit that does not rely on winning.
- Never increase stakes to recover a loss.
- Take a break if betting stops feeling recreational.
