Keep Gambling in Balance

Gambling should remain optional entertainment. Use limits, take breaks and seek support early if it begins affecting money, work, health or relationships.

Safer-play principles

  • Decide a money limit before playing and treat losses as entertainment cost.
  • Set a time limit and use alarms or account tools to end the session.
  • Never borrow money to gamble or use funds needed for essentials.
  • Do not gamble when upset, impaired or trying to recover a loss.
  • Balance gambling with other activities and regular breaks.

Warning signs

Potential warning signs include hiding gambling, spending beyond a planned limit, chasing losses, borrowing money, neglecting responsibilities, or feeling anxious and irritable when unable to play.

If gambling is causing harm, stop playing and contact a qualified support service. In an immediate emergency, call 9-1-1. If you are thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 in Canada.
